Risk Managment for Cultural Property Managers (28 January 2010) During a one day workshop organised by the Swiss Society for Cultural Property Protection in Thun/Switzerland, more than 50 practicioners and specialists in Cultural Property Protection (CPP) familiarised themselves with risk managment and emergency prevention procedures. Too many important buildings and CPP objects are lost due to a lack of efficient preventive measures. Without inventory and easily readable emergency planning documents, fire brigades have no chance in case of fire or innondation to spare or rescue valuable objects. This leads inevitably to unnecessary losses of substance and will, in the better case, cause enormous costs for restauration of damaged objects. In the Canton of Obwalden, a new organisational structure of CPP specialists will be introduced in the near future. CPP experts will be included in crisis staffs in case of major disasters, e.g. floods. Furthermore, whenever firefighters or police have to intervene in a registered CPP object, they will be able to count on support of a CPP specialist within 30 minutes. The experts found that the Swiss legislation, dating from the 1960-ies should be amended by provisions covering peace-time incidents. These are nowadays more likely to cause harm in Switzerland, due to technical or natural disasters including climate change.
